According to the constitution, the Vice President must assume office in case of emergency regarding the president. After the 25th Amendment was passed, if the Vice President was to become unable to execute the roles specified in the constitution, the Speaker of the House of Representatives would take over. The next man to assume office would be the President Pro Tempore. After that, the power would go to the leader of the longest standing department in the cabinet, then work its way down until it reaches the leader of the most recently founded department.
The process used to elect the President of the United States was carefully articulated by the founders. Our founders believed that the common man did not have the correct amount of intelligence in the area of politics and government in order to elect such a vital member of the executive branch. To combat this issue, they created the electoral college. The electoral college consists of officials titled electors. Electors are chosen by a common vote in the state in which they will represent in the election. Each state receives a number of electors after each census, this number is based on population. There are a total of 537 electors in the country. During the election, citizens vote for the nominee in which that want to receive the job. The electoral college will look at the results and make their own decisions, using the votes as a reference. The first candidate to receive 270 votes, wins the election.

The Vice President is another important member of the executive branch. According to the constitution, his job is to preside over the Senate and replace the president if needed. The Vice President has significantly less power than the President. Throughout the last couple of years however, the Vice President has been playing a more prominent role in the administrations. These roles include helping make important decisions, as well as advocating certain issues. Along with the President, in order to hold office, he must be elected.
